Decent lights, Homekit/Matter support is meh
PaulW· Review provided by uk.govee.com · October 23, 2024
The lights themselves are good enough. Bright and colorful. They are quite close together, so I tend to use every other one, or less. Installation is OK, the 3M glue seems to be strong. The ribbon cables are twisted in the box, so they don't lie flat - not the prettiest if visible. Some glue for these to hold them flat could be useful. You can choose different colours per light, but you can't choose different brightness settings per light, as far as I can see. The Govee app is pretty bizarre. Pairing for Matter/Homekit worked eventually. You can control the strip in Apple Home, but it stuffs up any customisation you might've done in the Govee app. Colour and brightness can be set, but it's all the bulbs at once. So anything other than really basic automations need to be set in the Govee app. What I can do it tell Siri to turn them off or on, and that seems to not stuff up the 'scene' I created - not normally anyway. When it does stuff it up, it's back to the Govee app to fix it. Govee app only works if I put my iPad on 2.4Ghz wifi (guys it is 2024, can't we just use Thread?). Maybe if I put it into a HomeAssistant setup I'll get some real control and integration with Homekit. I wanted motion detection, for example, but not really possible. Matter is such a crock. Despite the promise we're still stuck with vendor apps and ancient Wifi specs. But, soon it's halloween and then Christmas, and these will add to the garish light show - and I guess that's the real point of them.
An incredible bit of kit

Got this in the leadup to Halloween and Christmas and I must say I am absolutely mind blown. Firstly it arrived extremely well packaged. It was easy to work out how to use and set up, and the instructions are clear to follow. It was super easy to install by using the already attached 3M tape, but you can also add clamps to each LED light for an even more permanent fixture. Each segment has 12 LED lights on it, and you can daisy chain all the ones you get together. You extension cables too which is handy to extend the cable where needed. The switch box lets you also turn them on/off. I love that I can also control it via the Alexa app making it super handy. Where the magic really comes in is the app. It is extremely well designed and gives you FULL control over the lights right down to each individual LED! It has built in themes and designs, and you can set schedules, adjust brightness and much much more. A very comprehensive kit that has transformed the look of the house and cannot wait to turn them on each day and especially during the festive seasons!!
Nice and bright, Power loss memory issues, and no autoplay when local to the device limits usage.

These do not remember their last state when powered off by a remote outlet, power them back on it goes back to default, there is the odd time it will remember what the last setting was but then it won't remember the next. when I plug them in it shows the last scene for one second then changes back to the last one it -did- remember (seems the magic number here is 15 minutes and it remembers the setting). and even though you can use the same custom diy/workshop as the outdoor pro lights you cannot link the 2 together to run the same sequences making it a pain to control just as an fyi to others who might want to try to do the same thing. I understand that when you arent near them that this is not possible, but when I am in the house and connect to all the lights this should be possible to do. Unfortunate that they are not as configurable as cheaper sets on the market. As these are normally 99 dollars I would not recommend them at all at that price, I would likely recommend the wifi versions (which are twice the price) if you require better flexibility. Recommendation to govee, change the saving rate to saving the scene every 60 seconds instead of 15 minutes, and a way to group this with the permanent lights for the same scene would be highly beneficial
Fantastic

When I looked at getting these lights I thought that they were expensive. I wondered I they were worth it. I thought that the advertising had possibly been altered to make the lights look a whole all better than they are.
I went for it and bought 45m. And wow, them adverts don’t do them any justice, they are amazing, far better than my expectations of them. I am really happy with them and everyone says how beautiful they look. I just hope that they last a really long time.
As for the price, it works out at about £3.30 each. So if you break it down they’re very cheap If you think how much it would cost to buy 1 outdoor light.
They light the garden up around the house and really make it stand out. I installed them myself in about 3 hours. Having to clean the soffits first was a pain but helped with the end result.
